Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome (WAS) is a rare inherited disorder that may be characterized by recurrent infections due to defects in the immune system (i.e., partial defects in T lymphocyte and B lymphocyte systems [combined immunodeficiency]); abnormal bleeding caused by a deficiency in circulating blood platelets (thrombocytopenia); a high incidence of "autoimmune-like" symptoms; and the presence of scaling, itchy skin rashes (eczema) that may be mild in some affected individuals and severe in others. The range and severity of symptoms and physical features associated with the disorder may vary greatly from case to case. Because Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome is inherited as an X-linked recessive genetic trait, the disorder is usually fully expressed in males only.
