Hoarseness is described as having difficulty producing sound when trying to speak, or a change in the pitch or quality of the voice. The voice may sound weak, excessively breathy, scratchy, or husky.

Hoarseness or loss of voice is usually a symptom of an upper respiratory infection or a cold. However, persistent hoarseness or soreness requires your doctor’s attention. Sometimes you can get so hoarse that your voice is practically a whisper and can barely be heard. However, this is quite different from the sudden inability to try to say anything or a sudden inability to speak meaningful sentences. The sudden inability to speak is a medical emergency, much more serious than sudden severe hoarseness.
