Rasmussen's Encephalitis
Condition Overview: Rasmussen's Encephalitis is a rare central nervous system disorder characterized by chronic inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) and episodes of uncontrolled electrical disturbances in the brain that cause convulsive seizures (epilepsy). Progressive symptoms including paralysis of one side of the body (hemiparesis) and mental retardation may also occur. Although the exact cause of this disorder is not known, it is thought to result from an unidentified viral infection. |
